Emma Reyes, a self-taught Colombian-French artist, moves through the 20th century shaped by extreme poverty, exile, and an overflowing creativity. Long overlooked, she leaves behind a singular and powerful body of paintings, as well as a posthumous manuscript of remarkable strength titled Memoria por correspondencia.
Based on a childhood promise made to Emma, the director embarks on an intimate and sensory journey to bring back, through fragments, a woman who is always slipping away. This journey is woven together with her sister, Ana Perromat, co-author of the project, whose formal eye and sense of dramaturgy nourish the film’s material. Through little-known archives, close-up filmed paintings that guide the narrative, reinvented memories, and gestures from the present, The Return of Emma creates a dialogue between the artist’s gaze and those who today seek to restore her place. It is a sensitive return, moving between memory, recovered presence, and a profound reconnection with the motherland.
